Sometimes the Chore is Secondary

Recently, Fred Miller, VINE’s Chore Coordinator and additional volunteers installed a new garage door for an 83 yr. old care receiver.

When the job was completed, Fred offered his condolences to the man on the recent loss of his wife. The man took hold of Fred’s arm and told him his story.

One day he brought his wife home from dialysis. While pushing her up the temporary ramp to their home, he told her that life with her hadn’t been bad, and if he had it to do over, he would marry her again. She told him she loved him and would do the same. Two weeks later his wife died.

The care receiver’s eyes welled up with tears as he said “Every night, I go to bed, and pray that I won’t wake up tomorrow.” Fred stayed and listened as the care receiver shared memories about the young people in his life that call him dad and grand-dad; all in an effort to help relieve the man’s sadness.
